Screen Print, Embroidery or DTF? How to Choose the Right Decoration Method

Screen Print, Embroidery or DTF? How to Choose the Right Decoration Method

Choosing the right decoration method can make a big difference in the look, feel, durability, and overall cost of a custom apparel order.

For distributors, the best decoration method usually comes down to five things: quantity, artwork, garment type, durability, and budget.

At Screenplay, we produce orders using screen printing, embroidery, and DTF heat transfers every day. Each method has its strengths, and understanding those differences can help you recommend the right solution to your customer from the beginning.

Screen Printing: Best for Volume and Classic Apparel Programs

Screen printing remains one of the most popular decoration methods for T-shirts, sweatshirts, and other apparel.

Ink is applied directly through screens onto the garment, creating a durable print that works especially well for medium- to high-volume orders.

Screen printing is a great choice when:

  • You are producing larger quantities
  • The artwork uses a limited number of colors
  • You need a durable, professional finish
  • The order includes T-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, or similar garments
  • Cost per piece becomes increasingly important as quantity grows

Because screens must be prepared for each color in the design, screen printing generally becomes more cost-effective as quantities increase.

For a 500-piece event shirt, company program, school order, or recurring apparel program, screen printing is often hard to beat.

Things to consider

Highly detailed artwork, gradients, photographs, or very small quantities may be better suited for another decoration method.

Garment fabric and construction also matter. Certain performance fabrics, jackets, seams, pockets, and specialty materials can require additional planning.

Embroidery: Best for a Premium, Professional Look

Embroidery uses thread to stitch a design directly into the garment.

It creates a dimensional, high-end appearance that is especially popular for corporate apparel, uniforms, hats, jackets, polos, and outerwear.

Embroidery is a great choice when:

  • You want a premium or professional appearance
  • The garment is a polo, hat, jacket, vest, bag, or uniform
  • The logo is relatively simple and easy to reproduce with thread
  • Long-term durability is important
  • You want decoration that becomes part of the garment itself

Embroidery works especially well for company logos and branded apparel that employees or customers may wear repeatedly.

Unlike printing, embroidery pricing is often influenced by stitch count rather than simply the number of colors.

Things to consider

Very small lettering and extremely detailed artwork may need to be simplified.

Large embroidered designs can also become heavy or stiff, so bigger is not always better.

A good embroidery file balances detail, stitch count, garment type, and overall appearance.

DTF: Best for Detail, Color and Smaller Runs

DTF, or Direct-to-Film printing, has become an increasingly popular decoration method.

Artwork is printed onto a transfer film and then applied to the garment using heat and pressure.

One of DTF's biggest advantages is its ability to reproduce detailed, full-color artwork without requiring individual screens for every color.

DTF is a great choice when:

  • The order quantity is relatively small
  • The artwork contains many colors
  • The design includes gradients, shading, or fine detail
  • Multiple designs or personalization are required
  • Screen setup would make traditional screen printing inefficient
  • You need flexibility across different garment types

DTF can be particularly useful for short runs, highly detailed logos, full-color graphics, and orders containing multiple artwork variations.

Things to consider

DTF has a different feel than traditional screen printing because the transfer sits on the surface of the garment.

For very large production runs or simple designs, screen printing may still provide a lower cost per piece.

So Which Decoration Method Should You Choose?

There is no single decoration method that is best for every order.

A simple way to think about it is:

Need Often the Best Fit
High-volume T-shirt order Screen Printing
Corporate polos or uniforms Embroidery
Hats and jackets Embroidery
Small full-color order DTF
Highly detailed artwork DTF
Large recurring apparel program Screen Printing
Premium professional branding Embroidery
Multiple designs or short runs DTF

Quantity is important, but it is only one part of the decision.

The garment itself, artwork complexity, customer expectations, intended use, and budget should all be considered before choosing a decoration method.

Sometimes the Best Solution Uses More Than One Method

Large apparel programs do not necessarily have to use one decoration method across every item.

For example, a customer program might include:

  • Screen-printed T-shirts
  • Embroidered polos
  • Embroidered hats
  • DTF-decorated specialty pieces

Choosing the best process for each garment can create a better finished product while helping control production costs.
